|
|
Alright - for a few weeks now my monitor has been acting strangely, displaying grey horizontal lines that brighten or darken depending on the contents of the display screen. Meaning if I open a browser to a dark blue page, the screen is very dark with lines; on the flip side, if I go to a bright screen (like this one) then it's easy to read everything but the lines are still there, however lighter. I have tried installing a new driver, dusted out and cleaned off all video/graphics cards, etc, dusted out the hardware, and have also recently replaced my monitor, but the problem persists. Obviously, it is not the monitor ($$$$ gone )This has actually happened before but suddenly stopped. It started again a few weeks back.
If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.
By the way, I'm new here and really like the design of this site as well as the navigation; also, the information-based help is really great.

Oh P.S. I tried to join chat in IE & Netscape - denied... any particular reason why?

HazelVixen,
Welcome to SFDC! Enjoy!
Some monitors have a faint line across it for display reasons (like the sony flatscreen ones).. but yours seem to be an extreme case..
Could it be that you have speakers next to your monitor? This sometimes affects it..
Have you tried another graphics card?
Try plugging the monitors power into a power supply by itself.
Hope this helps....

Thanx for the suggestions, MR2 - I don't believe that it would be the speakers since I just purchased the new monitor today and while booting up noticed the persisting problem.
I did try to plug the monitor directly into the power source- no change.
The graphics card is what I suspected, or at least something along those lines - I'm just not technologically inclined and needed someone to be more specific.
I will more than likely try that next.
If you can think of anything else that it would/could be, please let me know.
Appreciate it plenty!
~H.V.~

I do have a cellphone & charger on the same desk - do you suppose...? I will remove it from its spot & see what happens. Other than that, I don't have any radios, t.v.s, magnets, etc... lying around.
And which avatar are you guys refering to!
Did it happen to be in the Funny Forum?
I really appreciate the feedback - everyone's been very helpful.

Hi HV
Definately sounds like the graphics card..
And about the chat..DALnet is seriously screwed at the moment so I don't think it works in anything..
Currently looking to relocate to another IRC network.
It *should* work fine in Nutscrape though.

ShaolinTiger
Thanx for the input - since I've already got it out in the open that I'm a dummy when it comes to 'puters, could you tell me what exactly happens to the card that makes this occur? Is it degrading, or worn, or just plain freakin' old?
btw, lol @ Nutscrape
Thanx again,
~H.V.~

Okay, you've tried all the good suggestions from the others and you still get visible raster scan lines in your display, even though you connected a new monitor to the system. Right?
Then you should suspect a problem with the raster blanking circuits on your Video card. Try replacing the video card. If a new video card fails to correct the problem, replace the Motherboard.

Indeed, but as with the monitor you shouldn't *buy* anything until you are 100% sure that it's causing the problem(s).
When diagnosing problems you narrow it down by using known good equipment in conjunction with the suspect parts and swap and change.
Surely you must know a friend or relative with a PC?
You should use their graphics card in your machine with your monitor to test the effect.
Then use your graphics card in their machine to see if the lines appear on their monitor.
If they do, then it's 100% sure to be the graphics card.
Unfortunately the way things are made now days (so compact) you can't fix them without incurring more expense than it's worth..so it's best to buy a new one.

Oh yeah, just thought of one thing, try to change the refresh rate on your graphics card. That might help.
