I assume that I won't have as much free space left for the hidden OS?

The hidden OS will be inside a hidden TrueCrypt volume, which lives in the free space of the outer TrueCrypt volume. When you mount the outer volume you need to supply the hidden OS's password, so that TrueCrypt can know that it's there and avoid overwriting it. Without the hidden password, TrueCrypt has no way of knowing there is a hidden volume and it all looks like free space to it.
