I have a very small 80gb hdd and I wanted to try out the hidden OS but I am not sure what happens to my storage space after I create a new partition for it as I only have about 30GB left. I assume that I won't have as much free space left for the hidden OS?

Indeed you are correct. The hidden OS will be inside a hidden TrueCrypt volume, which lives in the free space of the outer TrueCrypt volume. When you mount the outer volume you need to supply the hidden OS's password, so that TrueCrypt can know that it's there and avoid overwriting it. Without the hidden password, TrueCrypt has no way of knowing there is a hidden volume and it all looks like free space to it.

There is a good detailed explanation at the TrueCrypt site: http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=hidden-operating-system

Also, this image may help to visualize the concept of the hidden volume and operating system:
