I don't like Norton simply because it is a resource hog. I've been using AVG free on all of my home computers for years with no issues.

This question is unanswerable. It's like asking "what's the best car for me"?

What can you afford?
How are you going to use it?
What features do you need?

You have to research what is available, and decide which fits your needs for the best price.

though the moderator above me is obviously right and it largely depends on your needs what antivirus program is most helpful for you, i myself can recommend Kapersky and McAfee (to be completely honest, a lot of people don't like McAfee but its working perfectly for me).

Any of these will work and they are all free:

AVAST

VIPRE... lightweight, very, very strong malware detection. Relative newcomer.

For detection of virus, root kits, and other malware I am fond of Avast. I also like Prevx although Prevx can give false positives. I also like Avast because of its boot time scan and fix capability. Some viruses and other malware are difficult to remove while Windows OS is running so I think this is a very good feature.

i used about 90% of all AV out on the market.

Eset NOD32 smart security
any kapersky
MBAM

are the best. good pricing. update modules are good. scans are efficient.
and with a good GUI interface.

pro verions of any AV will do alot more protecting then the free versions. free AVG or AVAST doesnt do a good job.

yes NORTON hogs alot of memory and RAM.

these are my opinions, depending on your daily internet/computer use, you have to really research which AV is adequate for you.

I use the Pro version of Avast and it does its job of blocking malware from getting through the door. Norton like McAfee permits malware to enter and then tries to eliminate them, although the Norton that I have now Norton Security Suite does good blocking at the door as well.

Again I do like the boot time scan of Avast. It once found a malware that couldn't be successfully eliminated while Windows was running but took care of it quite nicely during boot time scan. I still use it with Norton Security Suite and have not noticed any conflicts. Kapersky to me acts too much like malware. Might have been the version I had at the time, but I won't go back to it.

Eset NOD32 I have heard about, read a little about it a few years back, maybe I should look at the newer versions I'm sure there have been significant changes.
