We run Windows 2003 Server and we're experiencing problems at certain times when users spool documents to a network printer. spoolsv.exe dies and wants to close and so I go back in and start the print spooler service and it comes back up normally.
What prompted this initially was a user reporting her machine freezing when she tried to spool something. I went to our server and saw the spoolsv.exe error and closed it, then started the print spooler service.
However, the problem continues to come back and seems to be getting worse. I suspect corrupt print drivers, but wondered if anyone had any suggestions.
I've been looking through the system event log and noticed errors when I restarted the print spooler with Event ID 7031 - Service Control Manager. It said the print spooler service terminated unexpectedly (duh).
I'm trying to figure out the best way to resolve the issue and what suggestions as far as progressive tasks to take in resolution.
I've been doing a good deal of reading and I've seen quite a few suggestions about cleaning out the spools and reinstalling all the print drivers with the newest versions.
Is that the best solution to this issue or is there something else I need to look at?
