Here are three free antivirus programs:
Avast or
AntiVir or
AVG antivirus
Products from all three vendors received the Virus Bulletin's VB100% award and certification for virus detection from ICSA Labs.
Never install more than one antivirus scanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give you problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!

I have two very powerful and highly effective Antimalware programs by Black List Software:
01. blacklistsoft.com/omega.php
02. blacklistsoft.com/assassin.php
both are currently FREE and works with Windows. Hope this helps.

The orginal poster wanted a free antivirus, not a commerical one.
Norton is not a free antivirus

AVAST just released their new version, AVAST 6, that offers a sandboxing tool.
Quote: |
Avast's version automatically places programs into a virtualized state when it suspects them of being threats. It walls off suspicious programs, preventing them from potentially damaging your system while allowing them to run.
Avast's sandbox allows the program to run, while keeping track of which files are opened, created, or renamed, and what it reads and writes from the Registry. Since permanent changes are virtualized, so when the process terminates itself, the system changes it made will evaporate. |
