i'm using windows 7 ultimate x64 and finding that the usual tools i have to scan for malware are giving me errors when i try to use them. avast boot time scan only works on x86, combofix is only 32-bit, etc. is there a set of tools for removing/scanning for malware on the x64 platform?

Windows 7 Security programs are listed here

Click the 64-bit Windows 7 radio button for the complete listing.

MicroSoft Security Essentials
is 64-bit and guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

combofix is only 32-bit,

Even if using XP or Vista (32-bit), you should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert.

It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an Malware Removal Expert, not for private use.

Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.
Please read Combofix's Disclaimer.
