hi im fairly new to this area of networking.
What im trying to do is hide my ip on everything i use. Games, irc, and browsing.
I know how to set up a proxy for firefox to use. But is there any way i can hide it in applications that foot have an option for specifying a proxy server. And is it possible to direct all network traffic via this proxy?
If anyone can help that would be great. Im not sure what this is called or if i can use my router to set it up. Im using a netgear dg834g wireless router and would like to be able to hide all the computers in the network if possible.
I do know that your proxy must handle SSL as many 'Net Smart Apps' use SSL and if your proxy doesn't have port 443 available you will never get through.
A Product like megaproxy (TM) uses SSL for all Internet communications.
This may give you security without a conventional proxy. However I have
to believe that your communications from your node to megaproxy is
*not* SSL. Not sure though - more research is required.
I believe if your router is proxy enabled and you configure it correctly, ALL traffic will be directed to the specified proxy.
Not to be a stick-in-the-mud but I noticed THIS PAGE in a brief search.
Read and scroll down under the "Preview This Book" tab for info on
Proprietary Applications and Proxies. I guess they are generally hard-
coded to look for a particular IP address and if they don't see it right away,
Also note that proxies don't work too well with online gaming. If you're playing anything relatively modern, it will increase your ping and probably put you at a significant disadvantage in that respect.
