Doesn't Microsoft provide a migration tool?

I am not familiar with Microsoft SQL, but can't you just make a backup of the data and restore it in the other database?

I already tried backing it up and restoring it in SQL 2000 but it did not work.

did you try detach/attach the database?
There are few possible issues but you should be able to use this method to migrate your old database to a newer server.
Google will bring you tons of information, here is one link that might help:

Theres a database migration tool exports structures and data tables of large database file and convert into MySQL server format efficiently and quickly. Database file convertor can either overwrites or create new destination database. Data migration tool needs no change in attributes, indexes, and keys values when identical records coverts into relational database table records. Utility have interactive GUI and run on windows OS.
This version is the first release on CNET Download.com.
